Developing sustainable open models

inno³’s research aims to build understanding, propose analytical frameworks, and develop tools for public and private institutions seeking to engage with open models—whether open source software, open data, digital commons, or open science.

We combine academic rigor with deep field expertise, working at the intersection of law, social sciences, and technology policy. Our research informs both practice and regulation, and feeds directly into the advisory work we carry out with our clients.

Our research themes

  • Software supply chain & transparency — SBOM standards (SPDX, CycloneDX), license compliance, regulatory obligations under the Cyber Resilience Act and NIS2.
  • Open source governance — OSPO design, contribution policies, open source program offices, community sustainability models.
  • Digital commons — Legal frameworks, shared governance models, economic sustainability, alignment with European initiatives.
  • AI & open models — Governance of open AI models, classification of risks under the AI Act, impact on open ecosystems.
  • Digital sovereignty — European software infrastructure, public policy for open source (EuroStack, DINUM), strategic use of open models in public and private sectors.

Our approach: research-action

We practice research-action: our studies are grounded in real situations, co-developed with practitioners, and designed to produce usable outputs—analytical reports, policy recommendations, tools, and reference frameworks.

inno³ collaborates with academic institutions, public bodies, European institutions, and private organisations to carry out independent studies on open ecosystems—combining analytical depth with practical relevance.
