OpenSatCom – Survey of Open Source reports from European satellite telecommunications players

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) OpenSatCom project, led by the Libre Space Foundation in collaboration with inno³, aims to evaluate the relevance of Open Source economic and organisational models for the satellite telecommunications sector and to initiate strategic contributions to certain key Open Source projects in the field.

A first report has been published on ‘Open Source development models in satellite communications’, and the second phase is focusing on various sub-projects, such as improving constellation management in Orekit and Poliastro, or a survey to study the relationship between European satellite telecoms players and Open Source (for software or hardware).

Objectives of the study

The aim of this survey is to assess the attitude of the various stakeholders in the European satellite telecommunications sector (manufacturers, academics and institutions) towards Open Source hardware and software, and in particular to gain a better understanding of :

  1. their level of maturity with regard to the various Open Source models,
  2. their level of involvement in Open Source projects,
  3. their relations with specific Open Source structures such as foundations, but also their strategy in this area and their expectations regarding ESA’s position in this field.

Participate in the study

Whether or not you are familiar with Open Source, if you are a player in the European satcom ecosystem, don’t hesitate to take part in the study (until 30/4/2021).
