FOSDEM 2021 : Open Research Tools and Technologies
FOSDEM, a 2-day event organised in Brussels since 2001 by volunteers with the aim of promoting the use of free and open source software, will be held online on 6 and 7 February 2021 for its new edition due to health conditions. A free, non-commercial event, it is organised by and for the community with the aim of providing free and open source software communities and developers with a place to meet and :
- get in touch with other developers and projects;
- keep informed of the latest developments in the world of free software;
- keep informed of the latest developments in the world of open source;
- attend a wide range of presentations and discussions on a variety of topics, given by project leaders and members of the community;
- to promote the development and benefits of free and open source solutions.
inno³’s participation: coordination of the “Open research tools and technologies” devroom
This year, Inno³ is helping to organise the European event by participating in the coordination of the ‘open research tools and technologies’ devroom, which aims to share best practice and feedback on the development and use of open source and free tools in research contexts.
The ‘Open Research Tools and Technologies’ room is aimed at FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) developers from a wide range of communities involved in the production and preservation of research: scientists, engineers, journalists, archivists, curators and activists. This one-day devroom provides a forum for discussing issues related to the creation and use of open research technologies.
Some themes will be discussed during the event :
- New software releases of research tools or technologies.
- Feedback on open technology stacks used in research contexts (e.g., scientific research, journalistic inquiry, archive creation or publication) which collect, analyse, document, visualize, and/or share data.
- Tool design and implementation for specific research contexts, e.g. how to hold an algorithm accountable to social scientists, how to foster better replicability and interoperability thanks to FLOSS, how to cope with biases of a chart for a data journalist, etc.
- Issues and opportunities about bridging tech culture with research environments (research labs, libraries, newsrooms, museums).
Programme of the day
The devroom conferences will take place on 6 February 2021 from 10am to 6pm and will feature around thirty speakers.
